Sinus Surgery Q & A

Why would I need sinus surgery?

There are many potential reasons you may need sinus surgery. Dr. McCutcheon is an experienced ENT who can review the reasons you would benefit from sinus surgery during your consultation.

Some of the most common reasons include:

  • Chronic sinus infections
  • Removal of nasal polyps
  • Nasal or nasal valve collapse
  • Chronic snoring from nasal congestion that improves when congestion goes away

These conditions often affect the movement of air through the nose and sinus cavity, which may interfere with breathing and your sense of smell. The goal of sinus surgery is to open the nasal passageway and sinus cavity to improve breathing.

What can I expect during a sinus surgery evaluation?

Dr. McCutcheon takes a personalized and comprehensive approach to patient care and you can expect a thorough evaluation when you see him with concerns about your breathing and sinuses.

During your exam, Dr. McCutcheon asks detailed questions about your symptoms and medical history, as well as the types of treatments you’ve tried to improve breathing.

Visualization of your nasal and sinus cavity is essential for getting the right diagnosis and treatment plan. The team at Memorial Village Sinus and Hearing is dedicated to providing the best treatment possible and offers in-office sinus-optimized CT imaging that uses ultra low dose radiation. .

The advanced MiniCAT 2020™ CT scanner is accredited by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) for meeting the highest accreditation standards for CT imaging.

Your in-office CT scan provides Dr. McCutcheon a precise roadmap of your nasal and sinus structure as well as the afflicting pathology, which he uses to diagnose your condition and develop your surgical plan.

How is sinus surgery performed?

Dr. McCutcheon performs functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS), which is the most common type of sinus surgery, often together with other nasal or sinus procedures.

During the procedure, Dr. McCutcheon uses a nasal endoscope (a lighted tube equipped with a camera) to see inside your nasal and sinus cavity. He then inserts special instruments through your nostril to perform your sinus surgery.

Dr. McCutcheon reviews your personal surgical plan during your consultation so that you will know how to prepare, what to expect during the procedure, and what the length of your recovery will be.
